ChristopherColumbusOctober 12, 1991, marked the beginning of a year long celebration that will
culminate in 1992 with the quincentenary commemoration of Christopher
Columbus' voyage to the New World. Many activities have been planned to
commemorate and celebrate the 500th anniversary voyage of the "Great Mariner."
The World Olympics will be celebrated in Spain, the country from which
Columbus started his voyage. In the United States of America numerous
activities have been planned throughout the year; few of them however will be
as elaborate as the U.S. celebration of the 400th anniversary in 1893 with the
World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago. Activities are also planned
throughout South America, all are planned either to glorify or to condemn
Columbus for his "discovery. "Who was Christopher Columbus? " The basic facts
of his life are quite simple. He was born in or around Genoa, Italy in 1451.
He grew up with a burning desire for riches and he saw at an early age wealth
in the sea which surrounded him. He was trained in all of the necessary skills
of seafaring for his time. He was also acquainted with the latest scientific
and philosophical information connected with exploring. His great desire was
to reach the riches of spices, gold, and silver of the East by sailing West
from Europe. He convinced the Spanish and Portuguese monarchs Fernandez and
Isabella of the profitability of such a venture to their dual monarch and the
glory of the Catholic religion. He landed on Santo Domingo in 1492. After his
first voyage he returned to Europe where he demonstrated his discovery by
showing several "Indians" he had brought back aboard his ships. In all,
