There has been a dramatic undermining of the black American family structure over the last twenty years. One factor contributing to this situation has been the increase in the number of black female headed households. More than half of the black families in America are poor and were headed by women in 1992, according to the Census of 1990. This is an increase from 31.8 percent in 1970 to 45.8 percent in 1980 to 57.5 percent in 1991.
Half of the black children in American live in single female households, the most poverty stricken family structure in America. An estimated 43 percent of all mother only families live in poverty, compared to only 7 percent of families with both a
mother and father. Many married
couples generally do not remain poor for long. Poverty among single women with families is likely to persist and may be passed on to a. new generation.
