Children's temperaments as predictors of anxiety: Dr. Nathan Fox

Anxious kids are more likely than others to have low self-esteem, to have poor relationships with peers, and to be victims of bullying. Are there behaviors we can observe in very young children that can help us identify which among them will grow up into anxious teenagers and adults? Nathan Fox, Ph.D., looked at outcomes over a 20-year period for children who were socially withdrawn and fearful of new people and stimuli. Recognizing these behaviors at early ages is key to reducing chances of psychiatric disorders later in life. Dr. Fox is a Distinguished University Professor, Department of Human Development at the University of Maryland. He spoke at the NYU Child Study Center's Grand Rounds on Nov. 18, 2011. His presentation was entitled "Temperamental Antecedents of Anxious Behavior and Pediatric Anxiety Disorders."

In her pioneering work in new methods of science communication, she founded the nonprofit Institute For Figuring, through which she organized the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef, a touring exhibition at the intersection of science and art. The IFF's Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project is perhaps the biggest art/science community project in the world. More than 5000 people from New York and London, to Riga and Cape Town, have actively contributed pieces to Crochet Reef exhibitions. As of mid-2011, more than 3 million people had seen these shows.
